Nissan refreshes Frontier for 2023 and adds ‘midnight’ version

The updated pickup, designed for the US market, has added in price. The 2023 model year version is already on sale.

In February 2021, the Japanese manufacturer introduced the new generation Nissan Frontier mid-frame pickup truck (recall, this is the American brother of Navara), sales in the States started in September of the same year. The truck sold 60,693 units last year, up 64.7% from a year earlier, according to Carsalesbase. This year, sales continue to grow: in the first half of the year, customers bought 43,166 pickup trucks, which is 63.6% more than in January-June of the previous year.

Now the company has refreshed the truck intended for the US market through the 2023 model year. One of the major updates is the new Midnight Edition package, available with the full SV Crew Cab. The “midnight” version can be visually distinguished by the black 17-inch alloy wheels, the same color of the side mirror housings, the black exterior and interior details. Such a car has full LED optics, including fog lights. The package is priced at $1,790.

In addition, now the standard equipment of the Nissan Frontier SV Crew Cab in the long-wheelbase version (3551 mm between the axles) includes the SV Convenience package. It includes a heated steering wheel, lining and lighting for the cargo area, and heated front seats. In addition, the 2023 Frontier Pro-X and Pro-4X now have wireless Apple CarPlay support. Even in the Pro Premium package, they decided to replace the black interior trim with bright red.

The American office has named prices for the 2023 Nissan Frontier. So, the cost of modifying the King Cab, with a “one and a half” cab, ranges from 29,190 to 35,090 dollars, and for a refreshed Crew Cab pickup truck with a two-row cab, customers will have to pay from 30,490 to 39,120 dollars. Note that the cost of the basic version of the mid-size pickup increased by $500 (or 1.7%).

Recall that the list of pickup equipment includes: all-round cameras (with the so-called “off-road” display mode), wireless charging of gadgets, eight airbags, ESP with trailer stabilization function. Available for a surcharge: adaptive cruise control and SafetyShield 360 security systems (auto-braking with pedestrian detection, automatic switching of headlights from far to near, monitoring of “blind” zones, keeping in the lane and recognition of traffic signs).

The current pickup truck of the Japanese brand, intended for the USA, is equipped with a 314-horsepower V6 gasoline engine with a volume of 3.8 liters. It works in conjunction with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The drive is either rear or full (with a rigid connection of the front axle and a reduction gear). The 2023 Nissan Frontier is now on sale.

Previously, Nissan introduced the Frontier truck in three new concept versions: Project 72X (“inspired” by the Datsun 720, which was produced in 1979-1985), Project Hardbody (reference to the Nissan D21 Hardbody, which debuted in 1985) and Project Adventure (without historical inspirations, but with higher ground clearance, carbon snorkel, spotlight, rooftop tent, and a US Highway Atlas on the back).

Russians may be deprived of all-wheel drive vehicles for the needs of the army

How it might look in practice and a list of cars that may fall under mobilization

During mobilization activities, vehicles can be confiscated from citizens. This possibility is directly spelled out in the law “On mobilization training and mobilization in the Russian Federation.” Lawyer Maksim Yedryshov told MSK1.RU what kind of vehicles we are talking about.

“In accordance with the list of vehicles provided to the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, vehicles of categories M1G, N1G (off-road vehicles), buses (except trolleybuses), trucks and trailers can be seized from owners,” Edryshov explained. – Almost all construction equipment can be seized, as well as snowmobiles, ATVs and ATVs.

Vehicles can be seized both from legal entities (in other words, companies) and ordinary citizens. The latter mostly belong to the categories M1G and N1G.

“The M1G includes Suzuki Grand Vitara, Nissan X-Trail, Chevrolet Niva, Mitsubishi Outlander, the list is endless – this is what people call “jeeps,” said Yedryshov. – All UAZs or all-wheel drive Gazelle are suitable for N1G.

  • Category M1 includes cars that transport passengers, and there are no more than 8 seats in the configuration (not counting the driver’s seat).
  • Category N1 includes vehicles that transport goods with a permissible weight of not more than 3.5 tons.

Postfix G means that the vehicle belongs to off-road vehicles. The list of requirements for compliance with such transport is listed in detail in the Decision of the Commission of the Customs Union dated 09.12.2011 No. 877 “On the adoption of the technical regulation of the Customs Union “On the safety of wheeled vehicles”.

The possibility of mobilizing cars, including private ones, was provided for in the legislation of the USSR. At that time, the owners of certain types of cars, such as UAZs, had the obligation to register them at the military registration and enlistment offices. In 2018, the Ministry of Defense prepared an order according to which all cars were subject to mobilization, and records were kept using the traffic police database, which made it much easier to identify the right cars and their owners. That order never entered into force, but the relevant provisions were gradually introduced into other normative acts, in particular, they are in Article 13 of the Law “On Mobilization …”.

How can this be in practice

Auto lawyer Lev Voropaev studied the documents and explained the following.

“Since there have been no such events before, it is difficult to say for sure how it will look in practice, but from the analysis of the laws we can draw the following conclusion: during the period of mobilization, military registration and enlistment offices have the right to notify vehicle owners, including private individuals, of the need to appear for military registration cars,” the expert said. – And they can notify their owners in any way, including the dissemination of information through the media.

After that, the owners must provide serviceable vehicles to the draft board, but at first only for registration.

“Vehicles can be seized during the announcement of mobilization only from legal entities, as for private cars, martial law must be declared throughout the country or in part of it,” added Lev Voropaev.

The discussion about the possibility of seizing cars has been going on for a long time, but the authorities have always explained that the army is mainly interested not in cars, but in construction and trucks, sometimes domestic SUVs.

Sanctions for ignoring the order are fines under Article 19.25 of the Code of Administrative Offenses: for individuals – 300-500 rubles, for legal entities – up to 20 thousand.

– As far as I can tell, the mobilization of vehicles should not be confused with conscription, therefore, as such, criminal liability is not provided, – the auto lawyer concluded.

This is the new WARAN armored vehicle. He will be producing it at Autosan

WARAN is a vehicle created by Huta Stalowa Wola, and its production will be carried out by the Autosana factory in Sanok. It is intended for missile forces and artillery as a command vehicle.

It is a vehicle mounted on a Tatra chassis, similar to the previously described Autosan 4×4, on which the Ottokar Brzoza tank destroyer will be created. Although the chassis is based on a Czech construction, the body and armor were created by engineers from the Polish Armaments Group.

WARAN 4x4

Mine resistant

The vehicle is equipped with a remotely controlled weapon module with an A3 UKM 2000C machine gun caliber 7.62 mm, the OBRA-3 vehicle self-protection system with radiation detectors, laser beams and smoke grenade launchers. There are also external and internal means of communication, an observation head with a day/night camera, a thermal imaging camera and a reconnaissance drone. On the roof, there is a place for, for example, an observation system or a shooting position.

Its armor meets the standard of ballistic protection according to the STANAG 4569 standard at level 2. WARAN protects the crew against 7.62 mm anti-tank missiles and will survive the explosion of an anti-personnel mine. WARANA equipment may also include protection against weapons of mass destruction. The permissible total weight of the vehicle is 18 tons and it can take up to 5 tons of cargo.

The vehicle can take a total of eight people on board, including six soldiers with equipment. It also has air conditioning and auxiliary heating, so it is able to operate in very unfavorable weather conditions. RunFlat tires are mounted on the wheels, there is of course a central pumping system, and the cabin and engine compartment have an automatic fire protection system.

WARAN 4x4

A V8 diesel under the hood

Under the bonnet, there is a V8 diesel engine with a capacity of 12.7 liters and 400 hp. The motor is connected to an Allison automatic gearbox. WARAN can accelerate up to 110 km/h and overcome a wall half a meter high or a ditch 0.9 m wide. The range on one fuel tank is 650 km.

The structure of the vehicle is modular, so the vehicle can be not only 4×4, but also 6×6 or even 8×8. Interestingly, the most important element of the structure is a steel pipe, inside which there is a drive shaft and gears. This solution is intended to prevent damage to the drive system components in the field.

The vehicle could be used as a light tank destroyer, but it could also be used by special forces, border patrol vehicles, or to identify chemical and radioactive contamination. WARAN could replace outdated command vehicles still based on UAZs.

A unique six-wheeled Gelendvagen is put up for sale

At the Cars & Bids online auction, auctions are going on for an unusual homemade product based on the 2017 Mercedes-Benz G-class SUV.

six-wheeled Gelendvagen

The SUV lengthened the body and added a third axle, while additional rows of seats did not appear in the cabin. Homemade mileage is less than a thousand kilometers, although it is not specified whether it was from the date of assembly at the factory or from the moment of construction. Now they are offering 80 thousand dollars for a six-wheeled Gelendvagen, but there are still three days before the end of the auction.

The increase in length is divided roughly in half between second-row passengers and the trunk. The third axle is not connected to the transmission, so the wheel formula of this SUV is 4×6. In addition to lengthening the body and the appearance of an additional pair of wheels, the car was equipped with several parts from the Brabus tuning studio – this is the front bumper, radiator grille and spare wheel cover.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class also received 20-inch Black Rhino wheels, an expeditionary trunk and a canister fixed to the outside of the body, additional light and a ladder in the fifth door area. The beige color was given to the car with the help of a film: under it, the factory black tint was preserved.

The power unit of the SUV remained the same. Gelendvagen has all-wheel drive with three differential locks and a transfer case, and the car is driven by a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8. Develops an engine of about 420 hp. and is paired with a seven-speed automatic.

In June, one of the most unusual cars based on the Mercedes-Benz G-class, the off-road coupe Heuliez Intruder, was put up for sale. They ask for more than 200 thousand euros for a hybrid off-road chassis and a roadster-style passenger body.

Scoop – Range Rover Sport SVR: test run on the Nürburgring

The Nürburgring circuit in Germany is the playground of many production car prototypes. It is here, in the heart of the Eifel mountains, that the Range Rover Sport SVR continues its development trials before its launch towards the end of the year.

Range Rover Sport SVR

The third-generation Land Rover Range Rover Sport has just been presented and marketed with an entry ticket displayed at €94,200 that we are already thinking of the next sporting variant of this model. This is the Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR which should be marketed at the end of 2022.

For the moment this model continues its development tests on the mythical German Nürburgring circuit, where it roars its V8 and screeches its wide tires. Under the hood of this model, we will soon discover a V8 engine borrowed from BMW. This is the block found under the hood of the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M. It should display 625 hp under the hood of the English model, like the BMW X6 M Competition.

Well planted on its 23-inch wheels, the Range Rover Sport SVR moves quickly on the Nurburgring track. Like the Range Rover Sport, the SVR version features the new MLA (Modular Longitudinal Architecture) platform which can accommodate internal combustion powertrains and electric motors. It is also lighter than the old platform and also more rigid. There is enough to face the competition with serenity from the Audi RS Q8 and BMW X6 M and the GLE Coupé AMG 63 S from Mercedes.

Compared to the Range Rover Sport, the Range Rover Sport SVR is expected to sport a more muscular look with large front air intakes, quad rear exhaust outlets, widened wheel arches, roof spoiler very imposing, huge brake discs, etc. See you at the end of the year to discover this new sporty model.

Upcoming X3 shows for the first time

It will take a while until 2025 and the next BMW X3, but the first information about the Bavarian mid-range SUV is already gathering. That’s what we know about hybrid engines, the M40i, the interior and the price. First Erlkönig photos!

In the booming mid-size SUV segment, the BMW X3 is a real top seller and is set to remain so beyond 2025: in the important markets of North America and China, the X3, built in the BMW plant in Spartanburg, USA, is even selling better than the competing models from Audi and Mercedes. And: The SUV is also available as a fully electric version iX3, which rolls off the assembly line in China. In 2021, the X3 series, which has been available since the end of 2017, has received a facelift. For 2025 we expect the new model generation, for which there are two scenarios: Either the X3 is based on the further developed Cluster Architecture (CLAR) for models with longitudinal engines and rear-wheel or all-wheel drive or it already uses the new class architecture, which BMW for 2025 has announced. The focus of this completely new and almost infinitely scalable platform – from compact cars to luxury SUVs, everything should be possible – is on purely electric drives, as Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, has already announced. To this end, the brand is working intensively on new electric motors and 800-volt technology. More detailed information on the new class architecture, and thus on a BMW X3 (2025) that may be based on it, is not yet available. However, the first photos of prototypes speak in favor of the CLAR solution.

First photos: HYBRID, M40I, price, interior of BMW X3 (2025)

If the next BMW X3 (2025) is based on the modified CLAR platform, combustion engine versions in the form of mildly hybridized four- and six-cylinders should also be considered set. One of the prototypes confirms its classic drive with four clearly visible tailpipes. The long bonnet also points to the advanced cluster architecture. The upcoming X3 will then also benefit from the new generations of plug-in hybrid drives – with significantly higher battery capacities for a purely electric range of up to 100 kilometers. It is quite possible that the sharp M version of the BMW X3 (2025) and the M40i positioned below it as a part-time electric vehicle rely on the combination of in-line six-cylinder turbo petrol engine and electric motors and thus advance into new performance dimensions. As far as the interior is concerned, the future X3 will take another step in the direction of digitization by introducing the curved display from the i4, while the rotary pushbutton may have to go. A look at the current model, which is available from 52,800 euros (as of June 2022), helps to estimate the price of the mid-range SUV of the future.

What is the difference between 4WD and AWD?

When it comes to buying a car, whether new or used, there are many features and characteristics to consider. Do you want a manual gearbox or do you prefer the more common automatic? What engine displacement do you want? Do you want a two-door or a four-door? And among all these questions, of course, there’s the big one: should you get a two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive (4WD) or four-wheel drive (AWD) car ?

If you’ve ever bought a new car, you’ve probably seen the differences between 4WD and AWD. Most people have a general idea of what they mean – 4WD means that power is transmitted to all four wheels, but shouldn’t AWD be the same? As it turns out, they are similar, but there are a few important characteristics that differentiate 4WD and AWD. Simply put, one of the two is best suited to off-road driving, while the other is designed for regular driving, especially if that driving takes place in snow or heavy rain.

When it comes to buying a car, whether it’s new or used, there are many characteristics and features to consider.

Simply put, one of the two is best suited to off-roading, while the other is designed for regular driving, especially if that driving takes place in snow or heavy rain.

What is AWD all-wheel drive?

So, what is all-wheel drive on a car? All-wheel drive is intended for use on tarmac – yes, it will work on other surfaces as well, but it’s mainly intended for normal driving. Simply put, a four-wheel drive car needs to transmit power to all four wheels at the same time. This generally makes the car more powerful than its all-wheel-drive counterparts. It should be noted that an all-wheel-drive vehicle does this all the time, whereas an all-wheel-drive variant only does it when necessary. You should also be aware that in a four-wheel drive car, the wheels can move at different speeds during cornering, according to Car and Driver.

All-wheel drive can be found in almost every category of car, but you mostly see it on high-performance cars, modern SUVs and passenger cars. This is because four-wheel drive vehicles can be driven in almost all weather conditions, and these types of vehicles are usually designed for the day-to-day commute needed to take the kids to school or run general errands. One way to look at four-wheel drive vehicles is that they are very general and can be used in most situations, and they can be especially useful when it’s raining or snowing outside.

What is four-wheel drive 4WD?

While AWD can be used all the time (although many cars switch to 2WD from time to time to save on petrol), this is not the case with all-wheel drive vehicles. For the most part, these types of cars are reserved for use off-road or possibly on slippery surfaces (via Popular Mechanics ). Of course, you can also use 4WD on normal roads, but this will mostly be wasted on tarmac, and it really shines in off-road conditions such as hill climbing. With this option, the driver has to manually enter 4WD mode to use it; this is usually done by turning the knob to engage the mode.

When this happens, the front and rear driveshafts lock together. This forces both the front and rear axles to rotate at the same speed. Four-wheel drive cars are advantageous because it ensures that torque is always transferred to at least one wheel, so 4WD cars are ideal for off-roading. You’ll usually find the 4WD option on certain types of vehicle, including rugged SUVs, trucks and most other models designed for off-roading.

Disadvantages of 4WD and AWD

Although both all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive have their advantages, they are not for everyone and can make some aspects of owning a car more expensive. The biggest drawback most people think of regarding both types of vehicles is fuel economy. The fact is that both 4WD and AWD cars will cost you more at the pump. The technology needed to make all four wheels work means more fuel will be used per mile. In addition, there is often a size difference between the cars that use all four wheels and your 2WD options, which also impacts fuel usage.

Other than fuel economy, many people who buy either 4WD or AWD cars feel that they have to give up something to have another. If you get an AWD car, it feels like you can’t use it for off-road activities, although you can, just only to an extent. If you get a 4WD car, then you’re only really getting the capabilities some of the time, which some off-roading fans don’t appreciate.

4WD vs AWD on snow and ice

Weather conditions are another lens through which to compare 4WD and AWD vehicles. While both offer improved traction in harsh weather conditions, they also differ in this category. According to Car and Driver, the all-wheel drive system does best in normal snow or icy weather. This goes back to the fact that AWD vehicles are user-friendly because these systems are automatic. In other words, the driver simply needs to drive on a snowy or icy road and the four-wheel drive system will apply as much traction or torque as necessary.

However, if you live in a place where there are often particularly harsh weather conditions where snow accumulates, you might want to consider 4WD. For example, if there’s a good chance that you’ll have to climb icy hills or traverse deep piles of snow during winter driving, it’s probably best to opt for 4WD. Again, both 4WD and AWD bring a lot to the table, but even when it comes to weather conditions, it just depends on the buyer’s needs.

4WD vs AWD: which is better?

We know that both 4WD and AWD cars have their place in the automotive world because each option delivers power to all four wheels; it’s how this is achieved that makes them different. Which one a buyer chooses, usually if they have done their research, is a direct reflection of the type of driving they will do most often. But is one generally better than the other? For most people who use their cars for general purposes, four-wheel drive would be the best option. One of the main reasons is that all-wheel-drive cars have less complex mechanical set-up than all-wheel-drive variants. This means that an all-wheel-drive vehicle will be much more economical in terms of maintenance and repair costs (via True Car ).

Another reason why the average driver would prefer all-wheel drive is that it is user-friendly. This is because the system is always on and requires no extra attention from the driver. All in all, unless you plan to hit the road and really use your car to drive off-road over rocky and treacherous terrain, you don’t really need 4WD when AWD basically does the same thing, but with fewer drawbacks.

Ineos plans to open its first UK dealerships in June ahead of the Grenadier’s arrival

Automotive industry newcomer Ineos has announced its first UK dealerships from which customers will be able to order the new Grenadier 4×4. The new SUV will be available in 160 shops worldwide, 24 of which are located in the UK.

By the end of 2022, Ineos plans to have established a network of around 200 Grenadier sales and service centres, including its existing dealer groups, four-wheel drive specialists and agricultural machinery dealers. In total the vehicle will be available for ordering in 50 different countries.

The first 24 UK sites will include dealers in Belfast, Edinburgh and West London and other provincial dealers near Blackburn, Lancashire and Beamish near Newcastle-upon-Tyne. There will also be shops in Nottingham, Portsmouth and Carlisle.

Ineos says it is working with retailers to get the outlets ready to welcome customers in the “next few months”, with sales agents and workshop technicians undergoing an “intensive” training programme. The first of the new sites will open in June, and Ineos plans to make sure that ‘most’ UK customers are within a 45-minute drive of the official sales and service centres.

To achieve this, Ineos also intends to complement its dealer network with 10 partners and Bosch Car Service accredited service points. All service centres in Scotland, including those in Stirling, Kilmarnock and Inverness, will eventually “support sales and test drive”.

“For over a year we have worked tirelessly to find retail partners in the UK who share our enthusiasm and excitement for the Grenadier,” said Gary Pearson, head of INEOS Automotive in the UK and MENA. “They understand four-wheel drive users and their requirements and have a proven track record of exceptional customer service. Together with these partners, we look forward to providing Grenadier customers with the advice, guidance and support they need.”

The new Grenadier has already been unveiled, promising block style and off-road capability similar to existing favourites such as the previous generation Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class . Priced at just under £50,000, the newcomer will be available to order from May, although the first dealers won’t open until next month. Potential customers will be able to find their nearest Grenadier shop via an interactive map on the dedicated Grenadier website.

Suzuki Jimny returns to the UK as a 4X4 two-seater commercial avatar

  • Production of the Suzuki Jimny was previously discontinued in the UK due to stricter emissions standards.
  • A commercial version of the Suzuki Jimny was introduced in Europe last year.

The Suzuki Jimny has returned to the UK more than a year after it was withdrawn from production in the country due to stricter emissions standards. In its new avatar, the Suzuki Jimny is a lightweight commercial vehicle with just two front seats instead of four in its passenger car version.

The rear seats have been removed to turn the iconic 4X4 SUV into a commercial vehicle.

From the outside, the Jimny commercial vehicle looks identical to a conventional passenger SUV.

The Suzuki Jimny SUV was reintroduced in Europe last year as an N1 commercial vehicle. The Jimny had previously been withdrawn from production due to failure to meet stricter CO2 emission standards.

In terms of specifications, the Jimny commercial released for UK markets is similar to what other countries in Europe are getting. From the outside, the cargo version of the Suzuki Jimny looks the same as the passenger car version. However, the standard rear multiple seat now gives way to cargo space, which is 33 litres more than that of the passenger model with the rear seat folded down.

The Jimny two-door cargo SUV measures 3,645 mm long, 1,645 mm wide and 1,720 mm high. It has the same wheelbase as its passenger car version, with 210mm of ground clearance. The cargo variant of the Jimny will be offered with a payload capacity of 150kg and a total cargo volume of 863 litres.

The SUV in the cargo avatar will be powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder supercharged petrol engine. Combined with a five-speed manual gearbox and all-wheel drive system, the engine is capable of producing 101bhp of power and 130Nm of maximum torque. The cargo variant of the Jimny will reach a top speed of around 145 km/h.

According to the Japanese automaker, the Jimny SUV in the commercial version will be offered to customers with the same standard equipment previously offered in the passenger car version. Standard features include air conditioning, cruise control, a full-size spare wheel and a touchscreen infotainment system compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Subaru to create a new sub-brand for SUVs

The Japanese brand will have a sub-brand Wilderness, which will produce significantly modified versions of conventional models.

Subaru Company intends to create a new sub-brand, under which the Japanese intend to produce the most extreme versions of their models, prepared for off-road.

The new sub-brand will be called Wilderness, which can be translated from English as “wilderness” or “deadwood. Cars in the new lineup will differ from standard cars both externally and technically.

The first representative of the Wilderness family will be a Subaru Outback station wagon, which was spotted during winter tests in early 2021. The car will receive an upgraded suspension with increased ground clearance, off-road tires, as well as additional protective elements of the body.
The engine will not be changed. In the USA, Subaru Outback is available with a 2.4-liter “turbo four” producing 264 hp and 375 Nm of torque, variator and all-wheel drive.

The Subaru Outback Wilderness is expected to premiere before mid-summer 2021. The second representative of the new sub-brand will be an upgraded version of the Forester crossover.
