I can’t help but wonder how many of these vehicles never truly embrace their intended purpose. It’s akin to acquiring a high-performance racing stallion and relegating it to a pasture solely for the sake of admiring its presence.

In my hometown of Austin, it seems like every other vehicle on the road is an SUV, designed to handle at least a bit of off-roading. However, the reality is that hardly anyone here uses their SUVs for anything more adventurous than a trip to Target. The closest encounter with dirt for most of these vehicles might be driving through a small puddle after a rain shower, and even that is promptly washed away. Keeping the SUV dirty is a big no-no in the eyes of the neighbors. It’s simply not allowed.

In a bit of rebellion, I took a brand new Land Rover Defender on an adventure into the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in Washington this summer, purposefully getting it covered in dirt. After all, that’s precisely what you’re supposed to do when you own a Land Rover (or any 4×4, for that matter) – push it to its limits. That’s what these vehicles are built for. Why invest in a rugged machine designed to conquer challenging terrains if you’re going to treat it like an ordinary Chevy Malibu?

In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift towards more trail adventures, camping trips, and overlanding experiences. However, it’s clear that some folks may need a little extra motivation to venture onto off-road paths for the first time. In 2020, it felt as though the world was shaken by some colossal, ominous force, much like a snow globe vigorously agitated. When the swirling particles finally settled back to the ground, a noticeable change had taken place. People rediscovered the great outdoors. With a sense of wonder, individuals stepped out of their office cubicles and tore their gaze away from their phones, if only for a moment, to realize that our planet was still turning.

And they recollected that there is an abundance of sights to explore. With over 400 national parks, 560 national wildlife refuges, and approximately 250 million acres of public lands across the United States, there is ample space for outdoor adventures. Just in Nevada, the Bureau of Land Management manages an impressive 48 million acres of accessible land for everyone to enjoy.

It was almost like a revolution when Americans seemingly discovered overlanding overnight. They enthusiastically invested their earnings in outfitting their vehicles to align with their passion for off-roading. For instance, Ford took notice of this trend, and when they reintroduced the Bronco in 2020, they offered a catalog with over 200 accessories. Buyers had the choice of adding rooftop tents, compact portable refrigerators, cargo racks, trail armor, and various other accessories to enhance their adventure experience.

Furthermore, Ford made significant investments in its four-location Off-Roadeo program. My work has provided me with valuable off-road driving experience through numerous events, including guidance from Jeep Jamboree members and Ford Off-Roadeo staff, who have helped me navigate challenging obstacles. Additionally, participating in the Rebelle Rally, covering 1,500 miles of rocky, sandy, and mountainous terrain across Nevada and California, further refined my off-road skills. The experience of stopping on a dry lake bed to consult my compass and determine the right direction, all without the aid of street signs, was both intriguing and exhilarating.

In 2021, Land Rover extended an invitation to me to take part in its Trek competition, offering a glimpse of the challenging Camel Trophy events from the past. I found myself competing against notable figures such as Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn and high-altitude ski mountaineer Hilaree Nelson. “Whenever I run out of gas, it leads to an adventure,” he shared with Goss. “I get to meet new people or explore places I’ve never seen before. It’s a unique mindset that you can truly appreciate when you’re not rushing.”

He might find camaraderie among the antique Model T enthusiasts who enjoy off-roading on their vehicles’ original components. While it’s likely not the most comfortable ride, it certainly appears to be a blast. It’s interesting to mention that Model Ts had their gas tanks beneath the bench seat and didn’t include a gas gauge. Owners relied on wooden rulers to gauge their remaining fuel.

During the summer, my family explored fresh paths through Oregon and Washington in the Defender while indulging in fly fishing, discovering enchanting waterfalls, and embarking on hikes to remote mountain lakes where we didn’t encounter another person for miles. Just half an hour after departing from the basic campground where we left our SUV, we came across a black bear (and I managed not to faint, much to my relief). Each day, we prepared a picnic and located a rocky spot by the stream, all the while being captivated by the beauty of these previously unexplored locales.

When facing mud, clay, and similarly soft and adhesive terrains, mud-terrain tires feature an even more open tread design to aid in self-cleaning and gripping the surface. These tires are among the most robust options for 4x4s, though they tend to provide less comfort, generate more noise, and experience faster wear compared to all-terrain tires. As their name implies, all-terrain tires excel in various dry terrain conditions, making them a versatile choice for most other scenarios.

When it comes to wheels, modern factory alloys are quite robust, yet steel wheels offer even greater durability and can be more conveniently repaired in case of damage. However, the likelihood of damage is significantly lower nowadays due to the generally high quality of aftermarket rims.

Opting for aftermarket rims provides flexibility in choosing tire sizes, but it’s crucial to choose a rim width that matches your preferred tire size. Rims with widths of around eight or nine inches are generally a reliable choice, as long as they have the appropriate offset to fit your vehicle.

Opting for quality off-road suspension and a road-legal lift kit can completely enhance your 4×4’s performance both on and off the road, while also providing increased load-carrying capacity and durability for challenging terrains. A standard 2-inch lift offers the added ground clearance that proves invaluable on uneven or rugged surfaces.

“Tyres and suspension are the game-changers when it comes to off-road performance,” Pat emphasizes. “A modest suspension lift can enhance load-bearing capacity and improve obstacle traversal. Moreover, all-terrain or mud-terrain tyres boast sturdy designs that reduce the chances of punctures due to their robust build.”

Safeguarding your vehicle is a must, and a bullbar is an obvious choice, serving as a foundation for auxiliary lights, CB antennas, and a winch. Scrub bars offer extra defense for side panels in tight spaces. Meanwhile, upgraded skid plates and other underbody safeguards are typically sturdier than stock plates, shielding your vehicle from underbody impacts.

If your vehicle isn’t already equipped with a differential lock (or ‘locker’), adding an aftermarket rear or front diff lock can be a game-changer in challenging situations. A cross-axle diff lock essentially ensures that both wheels turn at the same rate, overcoming the typical issue where the differential sends power to the wheel with the least resistance. This can prevent a 4×4 from getting stuck when a wheel lifts or unloads in uneven terrain.

Both front and rear diff locks operate as cross-axle diff locks, effectively joining their respective wheels, whereas a center diff lock evenly distributes power between the front and rear axles.

Prevent expensive engine issues caused by contaminated fuel by installing an aftermarket fuel filter, and consider adding a snorkel if you’ll be encountering water crossings. “Quality aftermarket filters can provide up to 50 percent greater efficiency in preventing engine contamination,” Pat explains. “They often utilize superior materials and feature rubber seals, so don’t hesitate to invest in high-quality aftermarket options for long-lasting performance.”

To get straight to the point, the Ineos Grenadier car is impressive. The Ineos Automotive team, with their debut vehicle, has done an excellent job. The car itself is not in question, but rather the driver’s abilities.

The Ineos Grenadier has fulfilled its purpose of being a modern version of the classic Land Rover Defender, which was discontinued in 2016 for various reasons, including its poor on-road performance. Ineos founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a passionate off-roader, disregarded these issues and created a vehicle that catered to his interests and the preferences of many others who enjoy off-roading.

So, let’s clarify what this car is and who it’s for. If you’ve driven a G-class Mercedes, a Q-series Audi, or any of BMW’s X-cars, you might think you’re an off-road enthusiast seeking adventure. However, these premium SUVs are primarily road cars with some off-road capability. The Grenadier, on the other hand, is designed to prioritize off-road ability over on-road sophistication. When you’re traversing the Outback, the Namibian desert, or leaving behind rooster tails through volcanic ash, you’ll appreciate the Grenadier’s ruggedness and simplicity. But on the M1 or the North Circular or the A66, it may not be the ideal ride.

Rewind a bit. What exactly is the Grenadier?

In the UK, two versions of the Grenadier are available at first: the Station Wagon and the Utility Wagon. Both come with the option of either a petrol or a diesel engine, and share the same wheelbase and basic mechanics.

The conventional five-seater Station Wagon is the standard SUV option. It follows a similar design format as the current Land Rover Defender 110 and Mercedes G-Class. The boot capacity for this model is 1152 litres, and it increases to 2035 litres when the rear seats are split-folded.

The Utility Wagon version is designed for those who primarily use the Grenadier for work purposes. It features blanked-out rear windows and a more basic loadbay, providing 2088 litres of luggage space. In certain markets, a five-seat Utility Wagon is also available, offering 1255 litres of cargo capacity and slightly less space for rear passengers compared to the Station Wagon.

Ineos Grenadier 2023

The Station Wagon comes in different trim levels, with various individual or bundled options available. Two special editions are named after Belstaff’s tough off-road motorcycle jackets, owned by Ineos. The Fieldmaster version comes with pop-up “safari” sunroofs above the driver and front passenger, heated front seats, and leather upholstery. The Trialmaster version is built for extreme off-road use, with a snorkel, 17-inch alloy wheels, front and rear differential locks, and a rear-mounted ladder for easy roof access.

The Grenadier is priced starting from £55,000 for the Utility Wagon and from £58,000 for the Station Wagon in the UK, regardless of petrol or diesel engine. However, the majority of orders are for the Belstaff editions, which have a starting price of £69,000.

What’s it like to drive?

The performance of the Grenadier depends on the engine and the driving environment. Your expectations also play a significant role. If you’re used to the luxury of BMW X5 or current Defender, you may find the Grenadier lacking in sophistication and speed on the road. Additionally, the steering feels vague and imprecise. However, the on-road ride quality is excellent, the cabin is relatively quiet, and the seats (which can be manually adjusted) are comfortable.

During our two-day test, our initial impressions of the Ineos Grenadier were not positive. We quickly noticed that the front wipers were poorly designed, leaving a large dirty area next to the A-pillar, which was already obstructing a significant portion of the driver’s view. When the low sun appeared, lowering the visor rendered even more of the already shallow screen useless.

Furthermore, the rear view from the central mirror is even more disappointing as the unique off-centre split design of the rear doors obstructs the view of a considerable portion of the road behind. The rear wiper arc is also frustratingly focused on cleaning the area of the glass that is already covered by the spare wheel.

While driving on the road, the steering of the Grenadier feels both light and fidgety, and the diesel engine in our initial test vehicle feels unsettled, frequently changing gears through the eight-speed auto gearbox. It’s a bit peculiar, given that the 3.0-litre six-cylinder BMW engine is a reliable unit that doesn’t feel like this in other applications.

As we move off-road and the weather worsens, the Grenadier’s performance improves. With the help of hill descent control, permanent all-wheel drive, locking centre differential, optional locking front and rear differentials, and other electronic aids, the Grenadier is capable of amazing feats. It descends down a steep and slippery slope to a beach, navigates through rocks covered with hazardous seaweed, and then climbs back up the increasingly deep-rutted and gloopy slope.

On the first day of our test drive, we were only driving the diesel version of the Grenadier, which left us with mixed feelings. The steering on the road still felt light and unstable, and the diesel engine didn’t perform as expected, frequently changing gears through the automatic gearbox. Even though the BMW 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine is a proven unit, it didn’t seem to perform as well as it does in other vehicles.

However, the second day was a different story as we drove the petrol versions, which were much smoother, more responsive, and better coordinated with the transmission. Although the steering still didn’t feel quite right for road use, the petrol engine felt just as capable off-road as the diesel engine. Unfortunately, the poorly designed wipers remained an issue.

On the second day of testing, the petrol versions were used for a mix of on and off-road driving, including some faster road stretches. Despite the steering still being a bit off for road use and the wipers still being problematic, the petrol engines provided a smoother, more responsive drive that seemed better coordinated with the transmission. Even off-road, the petrol engine didn’t feel inferior to the diesel, which is typically torquier. The off-road driving on day two consisted of many miles of bumpy, narrow tracks, often crossed by streams. The Grenadier handled the terrain with ease, even with a semi-competent driver who kept getting distracted by the scenery. The petrol version is faster and more enjoyable on the road than the diesel, but neither is particularly fuel-efficient, with the petrol version getting between 18.9-19.6mpg and the diesel version getting 23.1-26.9mpg.

The Grenadier may not have a fancy interior, but it’s designed to withstand muddy environments and can be easily wiped down. The driver-friendly cabin has chunky buttons that are easy to use while wearing gloves, a traditional handbrake, and a lever to engage the central diff lock and switch between gear sets. Though it lacks leather and wood trim, the vehicle does come with cloth, vinyl, and plastic materials. The interior has more to offer than meets the eye, with front and rear USB slots and a rotary controller, which is essentially a BMW iDrive controller with Ineos branding. While the iDrive system is reliable and easy to use for adjusting navigation, entertainment, and other features, the Grenadier’s interior also has more buttons than most BMW vehicles.

The Grenadier’s overhead control panel is unique, taking inspiration from boats and planes rather than other cars. It’s both visually appealing and functional, housing buttons and switches for off-road functions like the front and rear diff locks, downhill assist, and off-road mode. The small screen in front of the driver is limited to warning lights such as the diff lock, while all other information is displayed on the central screen.

The steering wheel has a few buttons, including one labeled ‘toot’ that produces a quiet horn sound to alert cyclists of your presence. Overall, the driver’s seat experience is reminiscent of a less luxurious G-Class.

In 1991, four-door versions with a 16.5 cm longer wagon body were added, and to confuse historians, all-wheel drive SUVs produced during the period 1984-1988 were called the T-10 Blazer, and the GMC version was called the T-15 Jimmy.
